Corrimal

The Corrimal area runs up Wollongong's northern suburbs from Towradgi and Corrimal through Woonona and Bulli to Thirroul and Austinmer, squeezed between the escarpment and the beach. Auto electrical work here mixes salt air corrosion, family cars and commuter runs to Sydney, with steep hills and old mining-town streets in the background.

Suburbs in Corrimal

The northern suburbs grew on coal. Corrimal had a colliery and coke works, Bulli and Woonona had mines from the 1850s and 1860s, and the Russell Vale colliery has worked under the plateau since the 1880s. Today the strip is mostly homes, beaches and small shopping centres strung along the Princes Highway and the South Coast railway. Corrimal and Woonona have busier town centres, Towradgi sits low by its creek and beach, while Thirroul and Austinmer are squeezed against the escarpment with Lawrence Hargrave Drive as the main road. Salt, hills and commuting all shape the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in Corrimal

Every suburb here is within a few hundred metres of the surf or the escarpment, and that drives most of the auto electrical work.

Sea air and corroded connections

From Towradgi to Austinmer, most streets are close enough to the beach to get a fine coat of salt on anything parked outside. Over time it creeps into earth points, battery terminals, globe holders and trailer plugs. The first signs are usually a light that flickers, an indicator that flashes fast or a car that cranks slowly on a cool morning. Cleaning and sealing connections early saves chasing intermittent faults later. Our guide to cleaning corroded battery terminals is a good place to start.

Short trips and flat batteries

A lot of driving in the northern suburbs is short: down to the shops on the highway, to the station, to the beach and home. Those trips rarely give the alternator time to put back what the starter took out, especially with dashcams, phone chargers and modern electronics drawing power while parked. Batteries in these cars often fail sooner than expected. A proper load test tells you whether the battery, the charging system or a parasitic drain is the real problem.

Boat and box trailer lights

With the coast right there, plenty of households tow a tinny, a kayak trailer or a box trailer full of garden waste. Trailer lights that get dunked at a ramp or sit in the salt air between uses are a constant source of work. Corroded plug pins, broken earth wires and water inside lamp housings are the usual causes. Sealed LED lights and a dab of dielectric grease on the plug go a long way. See why trailer lights stop working for a step-by-step check.

Hill starts and charging on the escarpment

Bulli Pass climbs the escarpment at a maximum grade of about 14.6 per cent, and many streets in the northern suburbs climb steeply toward the bush. Steep hills, low speeds and stop-start traffic put real load on the cooling fan, starter and charging system. A weak alternator or tired battery often shows up first on the climb, with dim lights or a battery warning. Getting the charging system tested before a long run to Sydney is worth the few minutes it takes.
