Shellharbour

The Shellharbour area runs from the harbour village and the beaches of Warilla across to Oak Flats on Lake Illawarra and inland to Albion Park under the escarpment. Work here ranges from salt-affected boat trailers and beach cars to towing rigs heading up Macquarie Pass and tradie utes out of the Oak Flats industrial streets.

Suburbs in Shellharbour

Shellharbour is a city of distinct pockets. Shellharbour Village, Warilla and Barrack Heights sit on the coast, with older post-war streets, beaches and the hospital precinct. Flinders is a newer estate of family homes near Shell Cove and the marina. Oak Flats faces Lake Illawarra and has a busy run of workshops along Industrial Road. Albion Park is a farm-ringed town on the Illawarra Highway, close to the airport and the climb to the Southern Highlands. Salt on the coast and towing inland drive much of the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in Shellharbour

The coast, the lake and the highway west all leave their mark on vehicles here, so the common jobs change as you move from the harbour to the escarpment.

Boat trailers on the coast

Between the boat ramp at the Shellharbour harbour, the public ramp at the Shellharbour Marina in Shell Cove and launching spots around Lake Illawarra, a lot of local trailers get dunked regularly. Salt water gets into globe holders, plugs and the joins in the loom, and the lights start to flicker or die one at a time. Sealed LED lights, a fresh plug and heat-shrink joins make a big difference. Our guide on why trailer lights stop working walks through the usual faults.

Towing up Macquarie Pass

The Illawarra Highway west of Albion Park climbs Macquarie Pass to the Southern Highlands, and it's steep and winding. Anyone towing a caravan or horse float up or down there needs trailer brakes that work properly, which means a correctly set electric brake controller and a solid earth through the plug. Check the brake output before a big trip, not halfway down the pass. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller explains the wiring.

Work utes and vans

The workshops and trade businesses along Industrial Road in Oak Flats and Sunset Avenue between Warilla and Barrack Heights keep plenty of utes and vans on the road. These vehicles often run beacons, work lights, inverters and fridges off the battery all day. Heavy enough cable, proper fusing and a second battery stop the starting battery being drained flat on site. Wiring that's been added piece by piece over years is worth tidying up before it causes a fault.

Salt air and battery terminals

Homes close to the beaches at Warilla, Barrack Point and Shellharbour Village get a steady sea breeze, and cars parked outside there collect a fine coating of salt. It builds up on battery terminals, earth straps and connectors under the bonnet. If you see white or green crust on the battery, clean it off before it causes hard starting. A wire brush, a rinse and a terminal protector spray are usually all it takes.
