Common auto electrical jobs in Bulli

Bulli has the Princes Highway running through its old mining-era centre, the bottom of Bulli Pass, and Memorial Drive ending nearby. Its history is coal, and plenty of locals still drive work vehicles to mines and job sites.

Cooling fans on the Bulli Pass climb

Bulli Pass has a maximum grade of around 14.6 per cent and a tight hairpin, so engines work hard at low speed on the way up. If the electric cooling fan, its relay or its temperature sensor isn't working, the gauge climbs quickly. A fan that only runs some of the time often points to a relay or a burnt connector rather than the fan motor. Have the circuit checked before the temperature gauge forces the issue halfway up the pass.

Work utes and mine vehicles

Bulli grew around coal, and mining is still part of local life, with the Russell Vale colliery under the plateau just to the south. Workers' utes often need amber beacons, isolators, extra lighting and UHF radios to meet site rules. Every accessory should have its own fuse, tidy routing and a labelled switch, so faults are easy to trace and inspections go smoothly. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay covers a basic switched accessory circuit.

Alternator checks before the Sydney run

From Bulli, the Princes Highway heads straight up the pass toward the M1 and Sydney, so many locals commute or travel north regularly. That climb shows up a weak alternator fast, with dimming lights or a battery warning partway up. A charging system check is quick and much better than finding out on the plateau. Our guide on how to know if your alternator needs replacing lists the usual signs.

Brake lights on the downhill

Coming down Bulli Pass, drivers behind you rely on your brake lights to judge the slow, steep descent. A blown globe, a faulty brake light switch or a corroded holder can leave you with one light or none, and you probably won't notice from the driver's seat. Ask someone to check while you press the pedal, or reverse up to a wall at night. See how to replace a brake light globe.

Bulli auto electrical questions

My temperature gauge rises going up Bulli Pass. Is that electrical?

It can be. On many cars the electric cooling fan, relay, fuse or temperature sensor controls whether the fan runs, and a fault there causes overheating at low speed. It can also be coolant, the thermostat or the radiator, which are mechanical. Pull over safely, let the engine cool and have both sides checked. Don't open a hot radiator cap.

Can I add a beacon and light bar to my work ute myself?

Basic wiring is possible for a confident DIYer, but it must be fused close to the battery, use the right cable size and be routed away from heat and sharp edges. Mine sites and some workplaces have their own rules, so check those first. If in doubt, have an auto electrician fit it so it passes site inspection. Our guide on what size cable you need helps with planning.

Local tip for Bulli

If you're towing up Bulli Pass, check the trailer's brake lights and indicators before you leave Bulli, not at the top. A failed light on a slow, steep climb with traffic behind you is a risk. Also make sure your car's charging system is healthy, because the climb, the fan and the trailer lights all draw power at the same time.
